On Thursday, May 17, 2018, Lehigh University celebrated with a formal groundbreaking ceremony for the upcoming SouthSide Commons, an apartment-style residence hall for 400+ students. Slated to open for the 2019-2020 academic year, the five-story structure will rise at Brodhead and Packer Avenues on the site of a former university parking lot. President John D. Simon '19P; Kevin Clayton '84 '13P, Chairman of the Board of Trustees; Mayor Robert Donchez, City of Bethlehem; Tom Trubiana, EdR Collegiate Housing President; and Pat Johnson, Vice President for Finance and Administration, all spoke at the ceremony and were officially part of the ground breaking. Others in attendance included Lehigh University Board of Trustee members, senior leaders, and Facilities and Business Services members, along with EdR and their partners and local community leaders and businesses.
