Lehigh University hosted an art exhibit opening of Mark Podwal's work, All This Has Come Upon Us, in Williams Hall on April 27, 2017. Five prints of the 42-piece collection are on display and will be rotated with new prints each year to enhance the student and Lehigh community experience. The exhibit is made possible thanks to the generosity of Amy and Joseph Perella ’64 ’06H who donated the artwork to the permanent collection of Lehigh University.
The All This Has Come Upon Us portfolio illustrates historical incidents of anti-Semitism. Each print depicts a tragedy or injustice in Jewish history from slavery in Egypt through the Holocaust. The prints resemble a book’s page and feature a drawing and a painting, combined with a verse from the Book of Psalms. Podwal notes, “the paintings and drawings in this series are a disturbing reminder of how Europe’s extensive history of ‘Jew-hatred’ laid the groundwork for Terezin and Auschwitz.”
Earlier in the day, Podwal and Perella met with Lehigh University students and faculty members.
